Reds and Berry Press-On Nails

4 sets in total. By shape, 2 almond, 1 square and 1 round. By length, 2 short, 1 medium and 1 long. Every set contains ten nails, five per hand, pre-arranged and labelled left and right, in sizes XS, S and M. Applied in about five minutes and worn 3 to 5 days with adhesive tabs, or up to 14 days with nail glue.

Deep reds show chips at the free edge sooner than pale shades. If you are wearing a set for a full fortnight, red is the one to apply with glue rather than tabs.

A blue-based red is cool and sharp and flatters most skin tones; an orange-based red reads warmer and livelier; a deep berry sits closest to a plum and is the most forgiving in winter light. Red press-on nails photograph darker than they look on the hand, which is worth knowing before an occasion that will be photographed.

Red is loud enough to be the only thing happening. Gold jewellery warms an orange-based red and fights a blue-based one; silver does the reverse. If you are wearing a strong lip on the same day, take the nails a shade quieter or the two compete.

Dark colours show adhesive residue at the edges more than pale ones, so the wipe-down after removal matters more here. Alcohol on the underside, wooden stick around the rim, and the set stays looking new. Do not use acetone on a coloured set — it dulls the finish permanently.

Warm oranged reds sit best in summer light and against tanned skin; cool blue-based reds hold up better under indoor light through winter; berry and plum are the shades that read richest in the evening. If you are buying one red to wear all year, take the blue-based one — it is the least tied to a season and the least likely to fight whatever you are wearing.

Red is a strong colour and length amplifies it. A short red set reads polished and slightly conservative; a long red set is a statement and will be the first thing anyone notices about your hands. Neither is wrong, but they are genuinely different decisions, and it is worth being deliberate about which one you are making. A chip, a lifted edge or a gap at the cuticle shows on a dark colour far sooner than on a pale one, because the contrast against skin is doing the work. Red sets reward careful application and prompt removal more than any other colour here.
