Why Press-Ons Come Loose Early, and the Fix for Each

This is the big one, and it is invisible. Natural nails carry a film of oil, and hand cream, cuticle oil and the residue of soap all add to it. Adhesive does not stick to oil — it sticks to a clean, dry, slightly rough surface.

The fix takes twenty seconds: wipe every nail with the alcohol pad or a little acetone on a cotton pad, let it dry completely, and do not touch your face or your hair between wiping and applying. If you have just moisturised, wash your hands first.

A nail that is slightly too small leaves the sides of your natural nail exposed, and the edge becomes something to catch on. A nail that is too large lifts at the sides because it cannot sit flat on a curved surface, and water gets underneath.

Fit is measured across the widest part of the nail bed, and the right nail is the one that covers it corner to corner with nothing showing on either side. Too little and there are dry patches that become air pockets. Too much and it squeezes out at the cuticle, which never fully cures and stays soft.

A thin, even layer covering the whole underside of the false nail, plus a small dot on the natural nail, is the amount. Press for fifteen seconds — actually fifteen, counted — and hold firm rather than rolling the nail on. Rolling traps air along the line it rolls over.

Adhesive tabs are the gentler option and they hold well for a few days, but if you want the full two weeks, glue is what does it. Every ANARA box has both, so you can pick per occasion rather than per set.

Adhesive needs a couple of hours to reach full strength. Washing up, a shower, or wudu within that window softens the bond before it has set, and the set never recovers — it will feel fine on day one and lift on day three.

Apply at night if you can. The simplest version of this rule is to put them on when you know you are not about to use your hands in water.

Length multiplies leverage. Every knock on a long nail applies several times the force at the adhesive line that the same knock would on a short one, and a pointed tip concentrates it further.

If a set keeps failing and the first four reasons are covered, the honest answer may be that a long almond is not right for how you use your hands, and a short square would hold for the full fortnight. That is not a compromise — it is a different look that happens to survive.

Up to fourteen days is the ceiling, not the average, and it assumes glue rather than tabs and a set that went on clean. Seven to ten days is a good, ordinary result. One nail coming loose before the others is not a failed set — it is almost always the index or the thumb, which do the most work, and it goes back on in under a minute with a dot of glue.
